How to Set Up Credit Card Surcharging

Step-by-step guide to enabling credit card surcharging on Wedy Pro, including address verification, eligibility check, and terms acceptance.

Overview

Setting up credit card surcharging on Wedy Pro takes 2–5 minutes. You enter your legally registered business address, Wedy Pro checks your eligibility, and — if your region allows it — you review and accept the surcharging terms. Once enabled, the surcharge is applied automatically to all credit card payments across your smart documents.

Time to complete: 2–5 minutes.

Requirements

  • An active Elite subscription on Wedy Pro.

  • A connected payment account with submitted business details. If your payment account is not yet connected, you will see the message: Finish connecting Wedy Payments below to set up surcharging.

How to enable surcharging

To set up credit card surcharging on Wedy Pro, navigate to Payments in the sidebar. The Surcharging section appears at the top of the page with the description Pass the credit card processing fee to clients at checkout.

  1. Click Set up next to the Surcharging label. This opens the setup wizard.

  2. On the Set up credit card surcharging screen, enter your legally registered business address in the Legal business address field. The field uses address autocomplete — start typing and select your address from the suggestions. Only addresses in the United States and Canada are supported. If your address is already saved in your profile, it will be pre-filled — confirm it or change it.

  3. Click Continue. Wedy Pro checks your address against state and provincial surcharging laws.

  4. If your address is eligible, you will see the Your address is eligible screen showing your address and surcharge rate (for example, 3% on credit cards (US — NJ)). This screen lists what Wedy Pro will do once surcharging is enabled and what you are agreeing to. Review both sections carefully, then click Continue.

  5. On the Review terms and conditions screen, read the full surcharging terms. At the bottom, check the box labeled I have read and agree to the terms above, and I certify that the address shown is where my business is legally registered.

  6. Click Enable surcharging.

  7. The Surcharging is now enabled screen confirms your address and rate. You will see a reminder: Remember to disclose the surcharge on your own website and booking materials. Click Done to close the wizard.

After setup, the Surcharging section on your Payments page shows your rate and certified address (for example, 3% on credit cards · 123 Main St, New York, NY 10001) with a toggle to turn surcharging on or off.

What Wedy Pro does automatically

Once surcharging is enabled, Wedy Pro handles the following on every credit card payment across all your smart documents:

  • Applies the surcharge automatically when a client pays with a credit card.

  • Detects debit cards automatically and waives the surcharge.

  • Displays the surcharge transparently on the payment page before payment.

  • Shows the surcharge as a separate line in the client's email receipt.

  • Notifies you of any regulatory changes that affect surcharging.

What you agree to

By enabling surcharging, you accept these responsibilities:

  • Surcharge applies to credit cards only — not debit cards, ACH, or Buy Now Pay Later.

  • Disclose the surcharge on your own website and booking materials — the disclosure must be in Arial font at a minimum of 10 points, no smaller or less prominent than the surrounding text. Example: We impose a surcharge on credit cards that is not greater than our cost of acceptance.

  • Do not combine this surcharge with any other convenience or administrative fee.

  • Update your address if your legal business location changes.

  • You are responsible for any compliance penalties if card network rules are violated.

If your address is in a restricted region

If your business address is in a state or territory where surcharging is prohibited, you will see the Your address is restricted screen instead of the eligibility confirmation. The restricted regions are:

  • Connecticut

  • Maine

  • Massachusetts

  • Puerto Rico

The screen displays the specific reason — for example, Surcharging blocked in Massachusetts with the explanation Credit card surcharging is not permitted in Massachusetts under state law. This is a legal restriction, not a Wedy limitation.

If your business address is outside the United States or Canada, you will see: Country not supported with the explanation Credit card surcharging is only available for businesses legally registered in the United States or Canada.

In either case, you cannot proceed with enabling surcharging. Click Close to exit the wizard.

State-specific eligibility notes

Some states have additional surcharging requirements. If your address is in one of these states, the eligibility screen will display a note explaining the specific rules that apply to your region. Wedy Pro automatically handles the correct legal disclosures on your payment pages — no extra configuration is needed on your part.

Frequently asked questions

What if I don't see the Surcharging section on my Payments page?

The Surcharging section requires an active Elite subscription and a connected payment account with submitted business details. If you are on the Pro plan, you will see an Elite badge next to the Surcharging label and be prompted to upgrade when you click it. If your payment account is not yet connected, complete the payment setup first.

Can I change my business address after setup?

Yes. Click Edit next to the Surcharging section on the Payments page. The Update business address screen opens. Enter a new address and click Continue. If the new address is in an eligible region, review and accept the updated terms. If the new address is in a restricted region, you can click Save & disable surcharging to save the address and disable surcharging automatically.

What happens to my existing invoices when I enable surcharging?

Surcharging applies to future credit card payments. It does not retroactively change any completed payments.

Can I turn surcharging off after enabling it?

Yes. Toggle the switch on the Surcharging section of your Payments page. A confirmation dialog asks: Disable surcharging? with the message New credit card payments will no longer include the processing fee. You can turn this back on anytime from this page. Click Disable to confirm. You can re-enable it at any time without going through the full setup wizard again.
