Overview
When you enable credit card surcharging on Wedy Pro, your clients see clear, transparent disclosures and a detailed fee breakdown before they pay. This article walks through the exact client experience — from the disclosure banner to the payment confirmation — so you know what your clients will see at every step.
The surcharge disclosure banner
When your client opens the payment page on a smart document with surcharging enabled, a disclosure banner appears on the payment form. The banner heading reads Credit card surcharge and explains that a surcharge applies to credit card payments, while debit cards, bank transfers, and Buy Now Pay Later are not surcharged.
The exact wording of the disclosure may vary depending on the state where your business is registered, as some states have specific legal requirements for how surcharges must be presented. Wedy Pro generates the correct disclosure automatically based on your certified business address — you do not need to write or configure the disclosure text yourself.
The payment breakdown
When your client enters a credit card and it is detected as a credit card, the payment breakdown appears above the Pay button showing the surcharge as a separate line item:
Amount: The original payment amount (for example, $450.00).
Credit card surcharge (3%): The surcharge amount calculated on the payment total (for example, $13.50).
Total to charge: The final amount including the surcharge (for example, $463.50).
The Pay button shows the total amount including the surcharge — for example, Pay $463.50. Your client sees exactly what they will be charged before confirming.
When no surcharge applies
Not all payment methods trigger a surcharge. Here is what your client sees for each:
Debit card: No surcharge is applied. The payment breakdown shows only the base amount, and a note reads No surcharge on debit cards.
Bank transfer (ACH): No surcharge is applied. A note reads No surcharge on bank transfers.
Buy Now Pay Later: No surcharge is applied. The BNPL card displays No surcharge on Buy Now Pay Later. and the collapsed card shows · No surcharge inline next to the balance.
Prepaid cards: No surcharge is applied. Prepaid cards are treated the same as debit cards.
Wedy Pro detects the card type automatically when your client enters their payment details. Your client does not need to specify whether their card is credit or debit — the system handles it.
The payment confirmation
After a successful credit card payment with a surcharge, your client sees a confirmation screen with the heading Payment Successful! and the subtitle Receipt sent to your email. The confirmation includes an itemized breakdown:
Amount: The base payment amount.
Card fee (3%): The surcharge amount.
Total charged: The final amount charged to their card.
For bank transfer payments, the confirmation shows Bank Transfer Initiated! with the message Your payment is being processed and the note This typically takes 3-5 business days. We'll email you when it's complete. No surcharge appears because bank transfers are not surcharged.
The email receipt
Your client receives an email receipt after payment. When a surcharge was applied, the email includes a Payment breakdown section with:
Subtotal: The base payment amount.
Credit card surcharge (3.00%): The surcharge amount as a separate line.
Total paid: The final amount charged.
The surcharge appears as a distinct line item between the subtotal and total, clearly labeled with the percentage rate. If no surcharge was applied (debit card, bank transfer, or waived invoice), the payment breakdown section shows only the payment amount without a surcharge line.
When you waive the surcharge
If you waive the surcharge on a specific smart document using the Pass credit card fee to client toggle in the document editor, your client's experience is identical to a standard payment page with no surcharging. No disclosure banner appears, no surcharge line shows in the breakdown, and the Pay button shows only the base amount. Your client will not see any indication that surcharging exists on your account.
Frequently asked questions
Will my client know the surcharge is coming before they enter their card?
Yes. The disclosure banner appears at the top of the payment page before any payment details are entered. Your client is informed that a credit card surcharge applies — and that debit cards and bank transfers are not surcharged — before they decide how to pay.
What if my client's card type cannot be determined?
If the card type cannot be confirmed as debit or prepaid, the surcharge is applied as if the card were a credit card. This is a safety measure to ensure compliance — the surcharge is only waived when Wedy Pro can positively confirm the card is not a credit card.
Does the surcharge appear on the invoice itself?
The surcharge is not displayed as a line item on the invoice schedule. It appears only at the moment of payment — in the payment breakdown, the confirmation screen, and the email receipt. Your invoice amounts remain the base amounts without the surcharge.
Can my client avoid the surcharge?
Yes. Your client can pay with a debit card, bank transfer (ACH), or Buy Now Pay Later (if enabled) to avoid the surcharge. The disclosure banner clearly states which payment methods are surcharge-free.
What happens if a payment with surcharge fails?
If your client's credit card payment is declined or fails for any reason, nothing is charged — the surcharge and the base amount fail together as one transaction. Your client sees a Payment Failed message with an option to try again or use a different payment method. No partial charges occur.
Does the surcharge apply to tips?
Yes. If tipping is enabled, the surcharge is calculated on the combined amount of the payment plus the tip. For example, a $500 payment with a $50 tip and a 3% surcharge results in a surcharge of $16.50 (3% of $550).
