Overview
After enabling credit card surcharging on Wedy Pro, you can manage it at two levels: globally from your Payments page, and per-invoice from the smart document editor. This gives you full control — keep surcharging on by default, then waive it for specific clients, VIP projects, or promotional offers.
Where to find your surcharge settings
Your global surcharge settings live at the top of the Payments page in the sidebar. The Surcharging section shows your current status:
When enabled: Displays your rate and certified address — for example, 3% on credit cards · 123 Main St, Newark, NJ 07101.
When disabled: Shows Currently off with the last certified address.
Never set up: Shows Pass the credit card processing fee to clients at checkout. with a Set up link.
How to turn surcharging on or off
To toggle surcharging for your entire account, use the switch on the Surcharging section of your Payments page.
To disable:
Toggle the Surcharging switch to off.
A confirmation dialog appears: Disable surcharging? with the message New credit card payments will no longer include the processing fee. You can turn this back on anytime from this page.
Click Disable to confirm.
New credit card payments will no longer include the surcharge. Completed payments are not affected.
To re-enable: Toggle the switch back to on. If your certified address is still eligible, surcharging resumes immediately. If your address has become restricted (for example, you updated it to a restricted state), Wedy Pro opens the edit wizard so you can correct it.
How to update your business address
On the Payments page, click Edit next to the Surcharging section.
The Update business address wizard opens with your current address pre-filled.
Enter a new address in the Legal business address field. You must change the address to continue — the Continue button is disabled until the address differs from the current one.
Click Continue to check eligibility.
If the new address is eligible, review the updated terms and check the acknowledgment box: I have read and agree to the terms above, and I certify that the address shown is where my business is legally registered.
Click Save address to confirm.
The Business address updated screen shows your new address and rate. Click Done.
If the new address is in a restricted region, you will see the Your address is restricted screen. Click Save & disable surcharging to save the new address and automatically disable surcharging.
How to waive the surcharge on a specific invoice
You can waive the credit card surcharge for individual smart documents without disabling it globally. This is useful for VIP clients, high-value projects, or any situation where you prefer to absorb the processing fee.
Open the smart document in the editor and navigate to the Payment page.
Click the payment section to open the right-side settings panel.
Under the Credit Card Fee section, you will see a toggle labeled Pass credit card fee to client with the sublabel Turn off to waive the fee for this invoice.
Toggle the switch to off to waive the surcharge for this specific document.
Click Update to save.
When the toggle is off, your client will not see a surcharge disclosure or fee on this invoice's payment page — even though surcharging is enabled on your account. All other smart documents continue to apply the surcharge normally.
To re-apply the surcharge, toggle Pass credit card fee to client back to on and click Update.
The Credit Card Fee section only appears in the smart document editor when surcharging is enabled on your account. If you have not set up surcharging or have disabled it globally, this toggle is hidden.
How surcharging interacts with other payment settings
The surcharge toggle sits alongside your other payment page settings in the smart document editor. Here is how it interacts with each:
Credit card payments: Surcharge applies only when credit card is an enabled payment method on the document. If you disable credit card payments entirely, the surcharge has no effect.
Bank transfers (ACH): Bank transfer payments are never surcharged. Your client sees the message No surcharge on bank transfers. when they select this payment method.
Buy Now Pay Later: BNPL payments through Klarna, Affirm, and Afterpay are never surcharged. Your client sees No surcharge on Buy Now Pay Later. on the BNPL card.
Autopay: When autopay is enabled and the client has a credit card on file, the surcharge applies to each autopay transaction. The client is informed of the surcharge on the payment page before enabling autopay.
Tipping: If tipping is enabled, the surcharge is calculated on the total amount including the tip. For example, a $1,000 payment with a $100 tip and a 3% surcharge results in a surcharge of $33 (3% of $1,100).
Refunds on surcharged payments
When you refund a payment that included a surcharge, the full amount — including the surcharge — is refunded to your client. You are legally required to refund the surcharge along with the base payment amount. Refunds are processed through the embedded payment dashboard on your Payments page, and the surcharge refund is handled automatically as part of the total refund.
What your clients see when surcharging is waived
When you waive the surcharge on a specific invoice, your client's payment experience is the same as if surcharging were never enabled. No disclosure banner appears, no surcharge line shows in the payment breakdown, and no surcharge is added to the total. The payment page looks identical to a standard Wedy Pro payment page.
Frequently asked questions
If I disable surcharging, does it affect payments already made?
No. Disabling surcharging only affects future payments. Completed transactions that included a surcharge remain unchanged.
Can I waive the surcharge for some payment items on an invoice but not others?
No. The surcharge waiver applies to the entire invoice. You cannot waive it for individual line items within a single smart document — it is all or nothing per document.
What happens if I waive the surcharge and then add new payment items to the invoice?
The waiver applies to the entire invoice, including any items added later. The surcharge remains waived until you toggle Pass credit card fee to client back on.
Does my client know when I've waived the surcharge?
Your client will not see any reference to surcharging on a waived invoice. There is no notification or message telling them the fee was waived — the payment page simply does not show a surcharge.
Do I have to refund the surcharge when I refund a payment?
Yes. You are legally required to refund the surcharge along with the base payment amount. When you process a refund through your Payments page, the full amount including the surcharge is returned to your client automatically.
Can I re-enable surcharging if my address was restricted?
If you update your address to a restricted region and surcharging is disabled, you can re-enable it by clicking Edit on the Surcharging section and entering a new eligible address. Complete the eligibility check and accept the terms to re-activate surcharging.
