Overview
Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) lets your clients pay their entire remaining invoice balance through installment providers like Klarna, Affirm, and Afterpay — while you receive the full payment upfront. Offer your clients the flexibility of installment payments without delaying your revenue or taking on credit risk.
BNPL is available exclusively for Elite members with a connected payment account that supports at least one BNPL provider.
Time to complete: 2–5 minutes.
Requirements
An active Elite subscription on Wedy Pro.
A connected payment account with BNPL capabilities enabled. When you connect your payment account, each provider (Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay) is evaluated based on the details you provided — including your business type, country, and category. Approved providers appear automatically in Wedy Pro. If none are approved, the BNPL toggle will not be available. To check or request BNPL capabilities, visit the payment methods section of your connected payment account dashboard.
How to enable Buy Now, Pay Later
Open the smart document you want to edit and navigate to its Payment page in the editor.
In the right-side panel, select the ELEMENTS tab.
Under Payment Page Settings, locate the Buy Now, Pay Later toggle.
Switch the toggle to on.
Click Update to save and publish the changes to your client.
Below the toggle, you will see the disclosure: Clients pay the full balance via installments (Klarna, Affirm, Afterpay). Providers shown automatically based on eligibility. Estimated processing fee: ~6% + 30¢ on the total amount paid.
Once enabled, your client will see a Pay the full balance card below the standard payment form on the payment page. The card displays the total remaining balance, the number of installments covered, and the available BNPL providers.
What your clients see
On the payment page, below the standard credit card or bank transfer form, your client will see a card that reads:
Pay the full balance — the heading
The total remaining amount and number of installments covered
split with Klarna, Affirm, or Afterpay — indicating available providers
Clicking the card expands the PAY REMAINING BALANCE panel, where the client selects a provider and clicks Continue to be redirected to the provider's secure site. The BNPL payment covers the entire remaining balance in one transaction — not individual installments.
How it works after a client pays
After the provider approves the payment:
All unpaid schedule items on the invoice are marked as paid.
Autopay is automatically disabled for this invoice, since the balance is fully settled.
You receive one consolidated email confirming the full payment — not separate emails for each line item.
If the client abandons the checkout, all items return to their original status and the client can try again. If the provider declines the payment, items are marked with a failed status so the client can see the decline and attempt an alternative payment method.
Processing fees
BNPL transactions carry an estimated processing fee of approximately 6% + 30¢ on the total amount paid. This is higher than standard credit card processing (2.9% + 30¢ per transaction) because the installment provider assumes the credit risk on your behalf. You receive the full payment upfront — the provider collects from your client over time.
Exact fees may vary based on your payment account configuration. Refer to your payment account dashboard for your specific rates.
Important details
Elite tier required: If your subscription is not on the Elite plan, the BNPL toggle will prompt you to upgrade. The toggle will not activate on a Pro plan.
Provider availability is automatic: Wedy Pro detects which BNPL providers your payment account supports. You do not need to individually enable Klarna, Affirm, or Afterpay — if your account has them active, they appear automatically for your clients.
Provider visibility depends on the balance amount: Each provider has its own transaction limits. Afterpay supports balances up to approximately $4,000, Affirm up to $30,000 (balances over $20,000 may require a down payment from your client), and Klarna limits vary based on the client's creditworthiness. If your client's remaining balance exceeds a provider's limit, that provider will not appear as an option. For example, a $6,000 balance would show Affirm and Klarna but not Afterpay.
At least one other payment method must remain enabled: BNPL cannot be the only payment method on a document. You must keep credit card, bank transfer, or both enabled alongside BNPL.
Payment items are locked during checkout: While a client is completing the BNPL redirect, the relevant payment items are temporarily locked as pending. This prevents conflicting edits to the document during the transaction.
Autopay is disabled after BNPL: Once a BNPL payment succeeds, autopay is turned off for that invoice. If you add new payment items later, the client will need to re-enable autopay with a card or bank account, or use BNPL again.
Frequently asked questions
I don't see the BNPL toggle — why not?
The BNPL toggle only appears if you have an active Elite subscription and your connected payment account has been approved for at least one BNPL provider. Provider approval depends on your business type, country, and category — it is determined by your payment account provider when you connect your account, not by Wedy Pro. To check your eligibility or request BNPL activation, visit the payment methods section of your connected payment account dashboard.
Which BNPL providers will my clients see?
Your clients will see only the providers that are active on your connected payment account and that support the remaining balance amount. For example, Afterpay supports transactions up to approximately $4,000, so it will not appear for higher balances. Affirm supports up to $30,000, and Klarna limits vary by the client's credit profile. If your account supports all three but the balance exceeds one provider's limit, only the eligible providers will appear.
Do I receive the full payment upfront?
Yes. BNPL providers pay you the full invoice amount (minus processing fees) immediately. The provider collects from your client in installments over time — you bear no credit risk.
Can my client use BNPL for a single installment instead of the full balance?
No. BNPL on Wedy Pro pays the entire remaining balance in one transaction. For individual payment items, clients should use a credit card or bank transfer.
What happens if my client's BNPL payment is declined?
The invoice items are marked with a failed status so the client can see the decline. Nothing is charged, and the client can try again with a different provider or pay using a credit card or bank transfer.
Can I refund a BNPL payment?
Refunds for BNPL payments are handled through your payment account dashboard. Contact support if you need assistance with a BNPL refund.
